Is Your Child Afraid of the Dentist?
Your child is afraid of the dentist. What do you do?
Dental anxiety is a common issue among children. It may stem from fear of the unknown, previous negative experiences, or simply the unfamiliarity of the environment.
At Adams and Seaton Pediatric Dentistry, we specialize in children’s dentistry. We want your child’s dental visits to be as smooth and stress-free as possible. That’s why we make our office inviting and kid friendly. But there are things that you can do as a parent to ease you child’s dental anxiety too.
Start with Familiarization if Your Child Is Afraid of the Dentist
Before the actual dental visit, introduce your child to the environment and the staff. Consider scheduling a “meet and greet” at the dental office where they can explore the waiting room, meet the dentist, and see some of the tools in a non-threatening manner. This can demystify the process and make the dental office feel less intimidating.
Use Positive Language
Talk to your child about his or her upcoming dental visit using positive and reassuring language. Instead of focusing on what might be scary (like needles or drilling), emphasize what is happening, like “The dentist will count your teeth and make sure they’re happy!” Encourage excitement rather than fear.
Establish a Relaxing Routine
On the day of the appointment, create a calm routine leading up to the visit. Play soothing music, engage in a fun activity, or read a favorite book. Maintain a relaxed demeanor; children often pick up on parental anxiety, so stay calm and collected.
Establish a Reward System
Implement a simple reward system after the visit to reinforce positive behavior. A sticker chart or a small treat can create a positive association with dental visits. Acknowledge your child’s bravery with praise to build confidence for future visits.
Ask Your Child for Feedback
Encourage your child to express feelings about the visit. Listen to concerns and validate emotions, assuring them that it’s okay to be nervous and that many kids feel the same way.
