Dental Hygiene for New Borns – Preschoolers

Maintaining good dental hygiene is essential for children as they grow, with specific practices designed for each developmental stage. Proper care not only promotes oral health but also sets the foundation for lifelong habits. Here, Drs. Adams and Seaton explain dental hygiene for new borns – preschoolers.

Dental Hygiene for Infants

Infants (0-12 months) need dental care even before their first teeth emerge. Parents should gently wipe their baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth or a silicone finger brush after feedings to remove plaque and bacteria.

Once the first tooth appears, usually around six months, a small, soft-bristled toothbrush with water can be introduced. Toothpaste is not necessary at this age. Consult a pediatric dentist by the child’s first birthday to discuss oral development and preventative care.

Toddlers’ Pediatric Dental Hygiene

As toddlers (age 1 – 3 years) grow, their dental hygiene routine should become more structured. Introduce fluoride toothpaste in a pea-sized amount, teaching them to spit it out after brushing.

Teach kids how to brush their teeth properly, demonstrating a circular motion and how to cover all surfaces of their teeth. Dental visits should continue every six months, focusing on early detection of cavities.

Dental Care for Preschoolers

Preschoolers from 3 to 5 years old typically have a full set of primary teeth, making consistent dental care crucial. Parents should supervise brushing, encouraging independence while ensuring that children are thorough.

This is also an ideal time to introduce flossing, especially if teeth are touching. As children often mimic adults, it’s beneficial to model proper dental care routines.
