Post-op Care

After your child has surgery, you will need to monitor activity, diet, and medications.

Activity and Care

Rest and quiet activities are important after surgery. Your child may be unsteady for a while due to the medication given. It is important to closely supervise any activity for the remainder of the day. Limit the day to indoor activities.

Diet

Begin you child’s diet with clear liquids such as apple juice, Gatorade or water. You may increase the diet slowly to include milk and soft foods. Advance to a regular diet as tolerated. Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids.

Medications

Children’s Acetaminophen products (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) may be given every 4-6 hours to help relieve pain and fever as needed.

Call the Doctor

  • If vomiting persists
  • If temperature remains elevated beyond 24 hours
  • If there is difficulty breathing
  • If unable to control pain with Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) or any other prescribed medication.
